{"id":4285,"date":"2019-09-19T13:45:57","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T17:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.floridacitrus.org\/newsroom\/?post_type=fdoc-news-item&amp;p=932"},"modified":"2019-09-19T13:45:57","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T17:45:57","slug":"theres-a-place-for-100-fruit-juice-in-the-diets-of-young-children-national-health-organizations-declare","status":"publish","type":"fdoc-news-item","link":"https:\/\/www.floridacitrus.org\/grower\/fdoc-news-item\/theres-a-place-for-100-fruit-juice-in-the-diets-of-young-children-national-health-organizations-declare\/","title":{"rendered":"There\u2019s a place for 100% fruit juice in the diets of young children, national health organizations declare"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new joint statement supported by four national health and nutrition organizations recognizes that 100% fruit juice, such as 100% orange juice, may serve as an important contributor to fruit intake that provides nutritional benefits to young children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement released Wednesday by Healthy Eating Research, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Heart Association, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement\nprovides guidance to parents concerning beverage consumption for children age 5\nand under. While the recommendations recognize that it is ideal for young\nchildren to meet daily fruit requirements by eating fresh, canned, or frozen\nforms of fruit, for some families 100% fruit juice may be \u201can important component\nof meeting daily fruit recommendations, and thus, achieving a healthy eating\npattern.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further,\nfor some children not able to consume fresh, canned or frozen fruit, \u201cconsuming\na combination of fruit and 100% fruit juice is preferred to not meeting daily\nfruit intake goals.\u201d It is recommended that parents provide primarily water and\nplain milk to young children and 100% fruit juice should be served in\nmoderation with no more than 4 ounces a day for children 1 to 3 years old and\nno more than 6 ounces a day for children 4 to 5 years old. The guidance states\nthat when consumed in moderation, 100% fruit juice does not appear to promote\nexcess weight in younger children.
